First we trust family
The people we know,
Then we trust friends
The family we choose,
We then look to God
For signs and a purpose,
But then over time
The heart batters and bruises.
Gone are child-like innocence,
Faith to move mountains,
Gone are the days
When anyone was your hero.
Love turns to hurt, bitterness, and scorn,
And we drown in it all
Searching for a beacon of light.
“Be sure of what you hope for,
Certain of what you do not see,”
“Pain comes in the night
But joy in the morning.”
And as words wash over me,
I come to understand
“My God will never leave me
Nor forsake me.”
